DIY - Repairing Computer Error Messages

The majority of computer errors are caused either by a registry related error, hardware failure, corrupt files or combination of the three. Exactly where do the error originate, that's a tough thing to uncover and many professional computer repair techs wouldn't know where to start. Why? Because most repair shops use software to diagnose errors and repair them. Little work is manually done sifting through files and lines of code.

The good news? You can use similar software applications to do the same thing. Programs known as registry cleaners scan through the central control system for windows®, the registry. In this file information is stored about all programs, users and hardware on your machine. The registry also allocated memory usage and file sharing amongst programs that are currently running on your desktop.

If the registry begins to run slowly, data goes missing or the file becomes to large it can affect how other software programs interact with the registry.

You can view the entire Windows® registry manually with a built in viewer. If you'd like to access it you can do so by:

Clicking Start - > Run -> Type RegEdit

This will open the manual registry viewing and editing tool. I've done it before but each time I get overwhelmed with the amount of data that's in there.

The easier and safer method is of course to run a computer registry cleaner. The cleaner will scan each registry key and entry to ensure it is up to date, relevant and related to a program that is currently installed and in use. Items found to be out of date, duplicate, or unrelated to anything on your computer will be flagged as errors.

Once the scan is complete you will be able to backup your current settings to ensure you can undo any changes made by the utility.

Repair Errors

After you've backed up your machine you can then do an automatic repair of all registry errors found. This doesn't take long and after a quick restart you should see some results.

What if the Errors Are Still There?

It is true that not ever computer error message is caused by the registry. Often times it's an individual program causing the trouble or something else. If you can determine exactly what program is causing the trouble then you can remove and install a fresh copy.

The extreme of this situation is sometimes having to restore your computer back to factory defaults with the restore discs that came with your PC. This should be a last resort as it's very time consuming and you will lose all of your data once you format your hard drive. Backup is a MUST if you're going to go this route.
